REBATES & INCENTIVES

Solar and battery rebates in Victoria, explained

Several programs can cut the upfront cost of a solar or battery system in Victoria — a federal small-scale certificate discount, the national home-battery discount, and Solar Victoria programs. Here’s what each one is, who qualifies, and how we handle the paperwork.

Figures and eligibility change regularly. We confirm what currently applies to your address and system before you commit — we don’t quote a rebate we can’t deliver.

What rebates apply to a Victorian home battery?

A Victorian household installing solar and/or a battery may be able to combine: (1) federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that discount eligible solar PV at the point of sale; (2) the Commonwealth home-battery discount under the national Cheaper Home Batteries program; and (3) Solar Victoria programs, which have included solar and battery support and interest-free loans. Eligibility depends on your address, income, property type and the equipment installed.

Federal solar incentive: STCs

Small-scale Technology Certificates are created when you install an eligible solar PV system under the federal SRES. Your installer assigns the certificates and applies their value as an upfront discount on the system price, so you don’t see a separate cheque. The number depends on system size, your solar zone and the year (the scheme steps down annually toward 2030).

Federal battery incentive: the national home-battery discount

The Commonwealth offers a discount on eligible home and small-business batteries under its Cheaper Home Batteries program, delivered through the same certificate mechanism as solar — so it lands as an upfront price reduction, not a rebate you claim back. It applies to eligible batteries within a defined usable-capacity range and steps down over time.

Federal battery discount tiers (as at May 2026, indicative — we confirm the current figure in your quote): first 14 kWh of usable capacity ≈ $252/kWh · 14–28 kWh ≈ $151/kWh · 28–50 kWh ≈ $38/kWh · above 50 kWh not eligible. The discount steps down over time.

Victorian incentives: Solar Victoria

Solar Victoria runs the state’s household energy programs — historically rebates for solar PV, battery support, and interest-free loans. Program names, amounts and eligibility windows change, and some open and close in batches, so we check what’s currently available for your situation before quoting.

How we handle rebates and paperwork

We check eligibility against your address and the equipment we’re quoting, apply the certificate-based discounts directly to your system price, and handle the Solar Victoria application steps where they apply. You see the net price after eligible incentives in your quote — not a headline figure you have to chase later.

We only quote incentives you actually qualify for. If a program is closed, oversubscribed, or your property doesn’t meet the rules, we’ll tell you before you sign — not after.

Rebate FAQs

Can I get a rebate for a home battery in Victoria?

Likely yes — eligible Victorian battery installs can access the federal home-battery discount, and Solar Victoria has run battery support programs. Whether the two can be combined depends on current program rules. We confirm exactly what applies to your address before quoting.

How much is the federal battery rebate?

It’s delivered as an upfront discount based on your battery’s usable capacity, under the national Cheaper Home Batteries program, and it steps down over time. We’ll show the exact figure for your chosen battery in your quote.

Do I have to claim the rebate myself?

No. The solar STC discount and the federal battery discount are assigned to the installer and shown as a price reduction on your system. Solar Victoria steps, where they apply, we handle as part of your application.

Can I combine the federal battery discount with Solar Victoria and solar STCs?

Solar STCs and the federal battery discount generally apply to the same install. Whether a Solar Victoria amount can be added on top depends on current program rules, which have included exclusivity conditions in the past.

Am I eligible if I rent, or already claimed a solar rebate before?

It depends on the program. Solar Victoria has applied owner-occupier rules, property-value and income caps, and one-rebate-per-property history. Tell us your situation and we’ll check it against current rules.

Do these rebates apply to commercial sites?

Some do, through different schemes — small-scale commercial solar can use STCs, larger systems use LGCs, and there are separate business programs. For a commercial site, book a commercial energy assessment.

Will the rebate amount change?

Yes — the certificate-based schemes step down on a set schedule, and Solar Victoria programs open and close in batches with changing amounts. That’s why we confirm the current figure at the time of your quote.
